Preface
Little has been written about the use of the Order in Canada and how it came to be incorporated into the Canadian honours system in 1972. This book outlines the history of the Order in Canada, from its inception in 1896 to the present day; including a complete roll of members of the Order and recipients of the Royal Victorian Chain and Royal Victorian Medal.
As an integral part of the Canadian honours system, the Royal Victorian Order and the Royal Victorian Medal continue to be used by The Queen to reward those who have rendered particularly distinguished services to the Canadian Crown.
A total of one-hundred and forty-nine Canadians have been appointed to the Order since 1896, and in addition to this twenty-four people born in or associated with Canada have been appointed to the Order. The Royal Victorian Medal in silver has been awarded to twenty-four Canadians—indeed the first Canadian recipient was a Nursing Sister serving in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. This history of service reflects a rich heritage of service to the Crown.
